The Maribyrnong River
The Maribyrnong River west bank |
| Comments: This is a picture looking down river on the Maribyrnong Rivers west bank showing bicycle track and walking track.
This section of the river is a salt water (Maribyrnong means saltwater river in Wurrendjerri) urban reach just 5 kilometers out of Melbourne seen in background. It is heavily fished by recreational anglers for Bream, Mullett, Mulloway and Eels and Snapper for eating by locals. The tidal river banks are stabilised by bluestone to prevent erosion after the river was straightened in the 1930's. Up river |
| Comments: This picture is an up river view of the Maribyrnong River along the west bank, here the rowing club boat ramp and Fischer Parade Bridge can be seen in the background. Local land uses included ammunition and explosives factories and a rubbish dump all now closed. The land upstream was decontaminated and is now residential with a local University adjacent to the site. Our school occupies an old Quarry site used to quarry bluestone, once a local industry. The bank and recreation path |
| Comments: This is another shot upriver looking at the recreation track. The palms were planted when the river was straightened and banks lined with stone to assist with flood and erosion control in the 1930's. Date: 09.06.2008 Copyright: Foostcray Survivor Class

Conway helps us catch our fish samples |
| Comments: A local champion angler Conway Robinson has assisted the Footscray Survivor Class by catching us some fish to help with our POPs project. This 600+g Bream is a local species resident in the river. A fish this big is hard to catch and probably around 15 years old. The legal limit is 26 cm. This fish was our first sample! Conway noted that Bream in recent years have some yellow pigment flecks on the belly scales, something that concerns him! Date: 09.06.2008 Copyright: Footscray Survivor class

too little!! |
| Comments: Most of the fish caught by the class were too small to keep. Bream have a catch size limit of 26cm.
We had to release even fish at the limit as they would be unlikely to have lived long enough to bioaccumulate and biomagnify POPs to levels of concern. Date: 15.04.2008 Copyright: Footscray Survivor class
