Guidelines

In this activity, you will have the opportunity to investigate local extreme weather incidents.

You will also get the opportunity to interview people about their thoughts on climate change and local climate change adaptation.

Registration of extreme weather

It is up to you to decide if the incident is extreme compared to what is usual in your local environment; the incident need not come under this definition of extreme weather:

Definition of an extreme weather incident: do a UK definition

The wind or the rain or snowfall is so heavy, the expected water level is so high or the danger of a avalanche is so great that lives or values may be lost if society is not specially prepared for the situation. (Source: the Norwegian Meteorological Institute).

  • Register the date and time of the incident and describe what happened.
  • State the sources you have used (for example coverage of the incident by the media, people who experienced what happened, historical sources etc.)
  • It s important to include any damage that the incident has caused. For instance:

- Damage to property (buildings, cars, fences, etc)

- Loss of life/health (deaths or personal injuries)

- Damage to the transport network (how many days were the roads closed?)

- Pollution (for instance in the case of flood)

If you have taken photos of the natural incident, it would be great to insert the photo with the registration. You can also add links to media coverage of what happened.

Registration of your  intervies

What are their thoughts about climate and adaptation to climate change?

Who to ask?

You can ask people in your local environment

  • parents,
  • grandparents
  • neighbours

You can also print the questionnaire and get them to fill in the answers.

You may register as many as you want.

When posting many questionnaires, it may be practical to use the pupil login code function.

This is done by the teacher logging in and choosing “create pupil code” on the form for this activity. The pupils/ students can then log in using this code and post their own questionnaire(s).
